D'Halve Maen was built in Amsterdam in 1608. In 1609 Henry Hudson sailed to the New World with this ship and explored a part of the east coast of modern day USA, hence the Hudson Bay and Hudson River are called after him. Even though Hudson was British, he did sail for the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Hudson was fascinated by finding new sailing routes to the East Indies and sailing for the VOC was a yet another opportunity for him. The VOC had given Hudson the order to search for a new passage through the North East. Hudson though had more confidence in finding a North West passage. That is why, after not being successful in the East, he sailed to the West and ended up exploring the Hudson River up to more than 150 miles inland, thinking that it might lead to the other side of the continent.
Hudson's voyage was the first Dutch contact with the New World. Though for Hudson his voyage was no more than another failure, it wasn't a failure for others. Because the land of the new continent was found to be very fertile and have lots of natural resources and people to trade with. This triggered the VOC and other nations to send more exploration ships across the Atlantic.
Time line:
1609: Voyage of d'Halve Maen
1614: Forth Nassau established
1624: Forth Orange established
1626: Manhattan purchased of the Indies
1653: New Amsterdam chartered
1664: British take over control of New Netherland and change New Amsterdam into New York.
1989: Replica the Half Moon built in Albany (the furthest point up the river where Hudson got to)
2009: 400th anniversary of the Hudson voyage
So that's the story!
I hope to be back online soon. :)
