With my flight booked for Tuesday February 12 and still tons of work to do, I'm starting to get restless. Luckily, unlike most other deadlines such as those for exams or papers, this deadline also excites me. I'm really looking forward to spending some time again in a different climate, culture and geographical setting. I cannot wait to get started with my field work....!
Here's a short overview of what I'm going to Saba for:
A few miles off of Saba lies one of the world's biggest submerged atolls (2200 sq. km, 20-40 meters deep), the Saba Bank. Saban fishermen fish there for lobster and "redfish" (several snapper species). They also used to fish for queen conch (Strombus gigas), a large snail that can grow up to 30 cm in length. This fishery was banned in the 1990s when the population size seemed to be declining. The exact numbers were not known at that time and still little is known about the population of queen conch on the Saba Bank. Now I'm going to try to collect some data about this population.
I'll make use of an underwater video on a lightweight frame that I'll tow behind a boat at approximately 1 meter above the seafloor. By counting the number of individuals in the video, I'll get an estimate of the population density. Before that I'll have to 'calibrate' the video with a dive survey to check if all the conchs show up in the video. Next to that I will attempt to collect individuals to study the reproductive biology of the Saba Bank population and to start a reference collection of pictures and shells.
I've now been busy with preparations flatout for 4 weeks. My frame has been made (with help of my dad), all my material has been ordered and most of it has arrived, I've learned a lot about the queen conch, histology, video analysis and all my equipment, I've written a proposal and given a presentation, I've found someone to subrent my room in Wageningen, I've tested my frame in a swimming pool, I've worked together with the 3 other students who are going to Saba and St. Eustatius together with me to organise a lot of practical stuff and I've started cleaning out my room...
The mountain that seemed so huge halfway December has almost been conquered. One more week for the final sprint to the top and then I'm off to Saba!!! :-D
Love, Sanne

Hoi Sanne,

Lotte
