Keeping track of days and seasons
Blijf op de hoogte en volg Sanne
22 April 2013 | Bonaire, Windward Side
Yesterday was a considerably colder day, with a lot more cloud cover: the entire top of the mountain, visible today, was surrounded by white and grey fluffyness. The whole day anticipated the rain that fell in the afternoon, although it was less than I had suspected and much less than every Saban is wishing for right now*. (*It has been very dry over the past months, with the exception of the rain that fell in the past 3 weeks.) I walked a little way along one of the island's hiking trails to a look-out point up on a cliff that provides an amazing view over Windwardside, which is located in the saddlepoint between two mountain tops. The wind, already strong, grows into an even bigger force blowing in between those two tops. While I was standing at the look-out point the next cloud was pushed through Windwardside and up the mountain. Enhanced by the amount of yellow and red leaves on the trails (due to the drought rather than the season) and the smell of an autumn forest, this felt much more like October than April, even though it wasn't all that cold. For one thing, it triggered me to be alert and to go back home to hide inside, like on a stormy day in November! I did go back home. But unlike on a stormy day in autumn, I walked barefooted (because my flipflops were too slippery).
Although the above still gets me confused about which season or month of the year it is, I think I got the days of the week figured out by now :-). Life seems to have assumed a little bit of a regular pattern. I am working from 8:00 till 16:00 from Monday till Friday, sometimes an hour or two longer if I need to enter data from a survey or charge batteries to prepare my materials for the next day. After that it's either a beer (or more) at the pub in the harbour or straight up to Windwardside to buy dinner (usually at the supermarket). And sometimes after that another beer at a pub in Windwardside, in any case (almost) every Friday night. Friday is THE night out here, with as a highlight "Sabaoke", the weekly karaoke evening that lures a crowd of locals to the pub. (No, I did not actively participate yet, nor am I planning too!) Obviously Saturday is not a very productive day. Sunday neither if I end up drinking beers again on Saturday night.
If not too tired from the night before, the weekend is the perfect time to do laundry, read a book, hike a trail, write a weblog or just chill out, alone or with friends. I have met a lot of people already. The ones I hang out with most are my collegues from the office, the owners and employees of the Ecolodge, the crew of the dive shops, some fishermen and other locals and friends of friends. I don't think I could walk into a restaurant or pub at night and not meet someone that I know… That is a great aspect of living on a small island, although of course it has its drawbacks too. Learning more about island life and Caribbean life every day makes me feel more and more like I'm turning into a local…
Over the next couple of days I'll try to upload some more photos... I know people have been asking for them, but I have not had internet over the past 1.5 weeks.
Love, Sanne

Pa:
Willemijn is dus nu in Parijs , dus even rust hier.

Heerlijk!
